Introducing Screener.in

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

Hello friends! Three years ago, we thought of developing a tool to assist investors in research. We imagined a tool, which can exploit the modern web technologies to enable investors concentrate more on research than on procedures. Thus was born the Screener. Over three years, the application was written (and re-written) to make it as rich as possible.

Screener is a modern finance tool to analyse and search new stocks.

  1. I must say this is totally impressive tool for serious fundamental investors. I really give heart-full appreciation to all the DS Team. really thankless job.

  2. Hats off to you guys Great work. I really liked the way an email is sent if there is any business update.

  3. Kudos..Appreciate your efforts for having come up with this extremely helpful, easy to use research tool that collates all data related to a stock on a single screen..

  4. Hi Saiful,

The screener monitors the holding changes over both 1 yr and over 3 yr period. And thus in some cases it highlights both.

  5. Is it possible to add a medium in screener.in where we can compare 2 or more stocks based on their financial ratios ..like the one present in watchlist.

    1. Hi Deepak,

Currently the only way to compare stocks is by adding them to checklist.

Will keep the comparison feature in mind in future updates.

      Thanks,
      Pratyush

  6. Hi Guys, can we add the following for the screener:

    1. QoQ sales growth
    2. QoQ profit growth
3 QoQ movement in promotor’s holding
    4. Section for FII and DII holdings both annually and QoQ
    5. Average sales growth over “X” Quarters
    6. Average Profit Growth over “X” quaters
    7. Last Year Debt < Debt 2 years back and more

    Looking forward for your reply.

    Regards,
    Atul

    1. Hi Atul,

Screener provides an option for creating own ratios: http://www.screener.in/create/ratio/ . You can use it to create following ratios.

QoQ Sales growth: ( Sales latest quarter – Sales preceding quarter ) / Sales preceding quarter * 100
QoQ Profit growth: ( Net Profit latest quarter – Net Profit preceding quarter ) / Net Profit preceding quarter * 100

For change in promoter holding, we currently provide YoY change: Change in promoter holding
Will try to add QoQ change too.

For Average sales and profit growth, we provide average of 1/3/5/7/10 years. Also a weighted average of last 8 quarters change is provided via variable “Expected quarterly sales growth”

For debt, we provide the variables of Debt 3,5,7,10 years back. You can use these for screening or for creating more own ratios.

      Hope that helps,
      Pratyush

      1. Thanks Pratyush, It seems helpful please try and add FII and DII holding as one of the criteria as well 🙂

        Happy Investing
        Atul

  7. Hi I had written a comment on this post regarding dividend yield numbers. My point was that your screener is AWESOMe, but for some reason the dividend yields aren’t calculated accurately for companies where more than 1 dividend is provided in a CALENDAR year

I am assuming you are using calendar year for dividend yields? If so, for a company like Clariant, your div yield is way off mark as currently price is 623 Rs and dividend is 40 (10 +30) since January 2012.

    Hence Div Yielf = 40/623 = 6.42%

But in your system it’s 9.9%? Can you tell me why? As this is an important parameter for me 🙁

Even if I take the div from last July 2011, 30 Rs, Yield = 11.1% and not 9.9%

Please do explain. This I have noticied it happens specially for more than 1 dividend in a calendar year.

    1. Hi Hemanshu,

Screener calculates dividend yield based on the total dividend payed by the company during last financial year.

In case of Clariant, during the financial year ending December 2011, the company payed a total dividend of Rs.159.96 crores and the market cap of the company is Rs.1656.33 crores.

Thus the dividend yield is shown as 9.66%.

      Hope that helps.

      Thanks for the appreciation 🙂

      1. Hi Pratyush, thank you for the prompt reply. The market cap of the company is considered on the last day of the financial year?

  8. Great Site. One Suggestion, Kindly add EPS figures below the Net Profit Numbers for each quarter and annual results.

  9. Hi, Can we have a functionality to add certain filtered stocks

    I mean…
    1. In the watchlist, provide an option to select the inbuilt / user defined filters

    2. From the results of the filter, provide a check box for selection of the stocks from the list.

    3. Provide an option to add those selected stocks to watchlist.

    Thanks in advance
    Ravi G

  10. This the best screener in market. greatly appreciate your work. 2 features that will make this hard to beat by any standards are :

    1. Backtesting saved Screener for last 10 years with additional information on holding period for rebalancing.
    2. Portfolio page.

    1. Thanks Mrityunjoy for the appreciation and the feedback.

Yeah, backtesting feature is under development. However due to its complex nature, it is little hard to implement in a smooth way and thus it may take a little time.

The portfolio (in form of multiple and smart watchlists) is also under active development and will be available soon.

      Best regards,
      Pratyush

  11. As it is not possible to figure out (or atleast i don’t know how to check )how the program arrived at let’s say G-factor, pros or cons, it makes it hard to believe it as reliable.
If you can add this feature (or guide me if i am mistaken) it can be very helpful.

Besides, i have never seen something like this before.

Awesome app..!! Best of luck for its future..!!

    1. Hi Bhavan,

Thanks a lot for the appreciation.

G Factor is our propriety ratio which is based on multiple criteria. These include quarterly growth, valuations, dividend yield and financial strength.

We keep adjusting the ratio to reflect current economic conditions.

      Hope that helps,
      Pratyush

      1. Hi Prathyush,

How to use G Factor. Let’s say I have purchased a stock of G Factor as 9 and after few months later G Factor reduces to 7, then should I hold the stock or sell it out?

        Regards,
        Yogesh

        1. Hi Yogesh,

Any financial ratio only follows the qualitative factors of a company. I would advice you to take the trading decisions, either of buying or selling, only after analyzing the stock’s qualitative factors instead of only the ratios.

          Hope that helps,
          Pratyush

      2. I am very unsure of What G Factor is! This make me confused. I select stocks based on my own reading but then G factor comes. I know biggies has created it so I could not ignore it.

Problem is I do not know what this G Factor denote actually! A selection can be made for say 6 months or 1 year based on difference of valuation but it may happen that this company is not very good for longer term but good for quick gain because of valuation difference with its peers. If I see it is cheap now so I invest.

So, please tell me what G Factor actually tell? Does it tells about Fundamental based on past financials or it tells about earning potential over certain period ( say 6 months or 1 year) of time. For fundamental edelweiss.in has their own score. There it is defined what their Score tell but I could not find any page for its description. I know that you do not want to disclose formula but at least explain what it actually is! Thank you.

  12. G Factor is just a score like Piotroski Score. It is purely based on historical results (primarily latest quarterly results). It is just an indicator or growth in the quarterly numbers of a company. G Factor works best for small and mid cap companies. A high G Factor might symbolize a good growth, but a low G Factor number doesn’t mean that a company is bad. A G Factor of 2 can be equally rewarding based on different parameters.

    Hope that helps,
    Pratyush

    1. Hi Pratyush , we appreciate the reply but just wanted to know the constituents and their individual weightages that form the G Factor score…Would appreciate it if you could elaborate on this.

  13. this is a great tool!
    May I suggest something:
Well, I just want to avoid certain sectors altogether (and keep certain sectors)
please add a function to add/remove sectors of companies in the custom screen search query box
google search uses – (minus sign) to avoid results containing those words
ex. -mining (this will avoid companies in mining sector)

    thanks for the tool!

  14. Hi Admin..I have made a screener named Bull Cartel Filtered..In this PNB Housing Finance and Canfin Home were earlier coming..now its not…however its meeting all the parameteres…Please suggest why its not coming
