Awesome BSEXL – One Excel sheet for everything

“I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” – Bruce Lee

Excel is one tool which we all have used more times than the calculators itself. Then why not get all the data of the companies on an excel sheet ? Awesome BSEXL is an attempt towards that.

Awesome BSEXL is not any hard-to-understand software, but just an excel workbook with the data of currently 1500 BSE listed companies on one sheet. It is like the regular columns found in the newspapers or the Capital Market magazine. However, we have tried to include many other details into it, including following:

  • Script Code and Script Name
  • Last Trade Price
  • Book Value
  • P/E ratio
  • Discount (Book Value – LTP)
  • Sales of last four quarters
  • Profits of last four quarters
  • Sales of past three years
  • Profits of past three years

Using excel filters and advanced filters, you can create queries as you like and make the reverse processing possible (search companies which perform as YOU want them to perform).

We have included the basic advanced filter by default (you can learn more about it at Microsoft site). Thus your capabilities are unlimited.

The data currently in the sheet is only for past 3 years (however you can get data about the companies for more than 10 years here manually). Your comments are more than welcome for future developments.

  1. Hi Harsh, yes it is compatible with Excel 2007.

To update the prices, download the BHAV copy from bseindia.com and paste the data in the worksheet of Awesome BSEXL. Also the instructions are given in the worksheet itself (you might need to enable the macros security for the macros to function.)

    Hope this helps.

First of all, thanks for these efforts.

As for the excel, can you somehow build it to ‘automatically grab the data for 2009 and 2010 as well?

      Awesome job!

  5. Hi Pankaj, as it was the first try thus only around 1500 companies were selected. However, now we are working on a bigger web-based stock screener. It will cover more number of companies.

  7. this is BY FAR the best thing that ever happened to me. Thank you !! 🙂

BTW, when I run it in Excel 07, I get the “macros disabled” message. Do I need to do anything about that?

    Cheers

  11. Great effort. Truly awesome. Waiting eagerly for web based screener.
I downloaded bahv copy from bseindia.com & pasted it in update prices sheet. However some scripts show #N/A under price cell for some companies. I guess this is because new companies have been added since you have created bsexl. Can you advise how to get over this problem.
    Many thanks in advance.

  15. Hi Pratyush,
Just wanted to understand how this was created… how do you query for financial information?
Data entry operations by company is likely to be very time consuming

  16. I had a look at the new web based screener and it rocks! what a concept and the amout of filtering is amazing. It only allows to download first 1000 records. I am excel person, so getting a extract in excel and then playing on it is much more flexible. Is there a way to get a complete extract (more than 1000) based on the filters I choose? Great work on the screener and the blog.

    1. Thanks Aakash. Do keep an eye on updates. The new version we are working on will have even more variables, more alert options, better interface.

The web version is a bit complicated, in sense you have to type in the query, but we feel it is surely worth the efforts.

Thanks again for the feedback and appreciation,
      Pratyush

  18. This is great tool!! May be need to check the accuracy of the data..e.g. the market cap for Container Corporation Ltd at Rs. 868 appears very high…may be you can add the outstanding no. of shares as another column to ascertain more accuracy!!

  19. Hi, Is there a way that I can get the daily delivery % in an automated fashion? Essentially, I want to track the traded volume and the % delivery.
